"I've had enough of him for a lifetime. If we wait until morning, this excess water should wash down to the river and we ought to be able to get out on this back trail." |
"Sounds good, but what about tonight?" |
D.J. remained silent for a long minute, her gaze focused on a point in the distance. Then, as though she'd made a tough decision, her shoulders raised and lowered and she turned back to him. |
"There's a place. A cabin in the swamp where we can stay." |
"Your ex-husband won't come knocking on the door in the middle of the night, I hope." |

"You've got a deal. Just tell me where we're going." |
"My mother and father had a cabin much farther back in these woods. No one's been there since my father built the new house closer to the road." |
Chris remembered the trip they'd taken to reach the cabin. "The new house is closer to the road?" |
"Just wait until you see this place, McCall. You'll think you were in a four-star, luxury hotel last night. No electric, no heat, no plumbing. My parents were nuts." |
"Speaking of nuts, you're sure Rich doesn't know about the place?" |
"I'm ninety-nine percent sure he doesn't know |
